1. Properties
Molecular formula of glyoxal is C2H2O2. It is light yellow liquid with a little irritating odor. Vapor pressure is 29.3kPa (20℃), refractive index is 1.3826. It is easy soluble in water, alcohol, and ether.
2. Uses
Glyoxal is mainly used in textile industry as fiber treatment agent to increase shrinkage and wrinkle resistance of cotton, nylon and other fibers. Glyoxal functions as insoluble adhesive for gelatin, animal glue, cheese, polyvinyl alcohol, and starch; as raw material for organic synthesis. Glyoxylic acid manufactured with glyoxal can be widely used in spice, medicine, pesticide, papermaking, coating, paint, leather, food, and other fields.
